What Is AI GTM? A Guide for Founders

What Is AI GTM?

AI GTM (AI go-to-market) is the practice of running your entire outbound sales motion (prospecting, lead qualification, outreach, and meeting booking) with AI agents instead of human SDRs. AI GTM removes the capacity constraint: a team of three can run what used to require 10-20 people. For founders, that means pipeline at 1-2% of the cost of a human SDR team.

AI GTM is not the same as AI CRM. An AI CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive) adds AI features to a human-centric process (copilots, auto-logging, suggested next steps). Humans run the process; AI assists. AI GTM flips that: AI agents execute the full flow (find, qualify, reach, book) and humans provide judgment, approval, and strategy.

AI GTM vs GTM Engineering

GTM engineering is the practice of building and automating go-to-market workflows. GTM engineers use platforms like Clay, Swan, or custom integrations to build data enrichment pipelines, outreach sequences, lead scoring, and handoffs between tools. It requires technical skill and operational bandwidth.

AI GTM can be delivered two ways: build (GTM engineering, you configure workflows) or buy (autonomous GTM, AI runs the full flow out of the box). Founders who don't have a GTM engineer, or don't want to become one, typically choose autonomous GTM platforms like Harp, where you describe your customer, approve emails, and show up to meetings.

AI Native Sales vs AI CRM

AI native sales means sales built around AI agents as primary executors. The AI finds leads, qualifies them, drafts outreach, and books meetings. Humans approve, close, and refine. AI CRM is a CRM with AI bolted on: humans run the process, AI assists with logging and suggestions.

The difference matters for small teams. AI CRM assumes you have a sales team to log activities and run sequences. AI native sales assumes you don't: the AI team does the work, and you provide oversight. For solo founders, AI native sales (autonomous GTM) is the better fit.

When to Choose AI GTM

AI GTM makes sense when you need pipeline but can't afford or don't want a human SDR ($5K+/mo minimum). It also fits when you're the only salesperson and don't have bandwidth for prospecting, sequences, and follow-ups. AI GTM lets you focus on closing while the system handles the mechanical work.

Choose GTM engineering (build) if you have RevOps or technical capacity and want custom workflows. Choose autonomous GTM (buy) if you want pipeline without configuration: describe your customer, approve outreach, show up to meetings.
